I found this end table at my local Goodwill store. What caught my attention was that it was made of solid wood, so I knew it had great potential for a makeover.
Next, I thoroughly cleaned the entire end table with soap and water to remove any dirt, dust, and grime.
After the end table was completely dry, I used wood filler to fill in all the holes and imperfections. I allowed the wood filler to dry completely, then sanded the areas smoothly.
At first, I planned to paint the end table navy blue, but then I came across Mega Blue by Behr and decided to go with that color instead.
This was the result after painting, and I really loved how the color turned out. The bold blue gave the end table a completely new look.
Next, I wanted to concentrate on the inside of the drawers. I had a pack of floral tissue paper that I purchased from Amazon about a year ago, and I thought it would be perfect for this project.
I applied a layer of decoupage medium over the entire bottom of the drawer. Then, I carefully placed the floral tissue paper over the decoupage medium, smoothing it into place.
This was the result. Some of the wood showed through areas of the tissue paper, but I actually liked the effect. I thought it added a little extra character and charm.
Next, I wanted to tone down the bright blue and add some depth to the end table, so I used Dixie Belle Best Dang Wax in Black.
I started by applying the black wax to the crevices and details, then worked it over the rest of the end table. I wiped away much of the excess wax with a baby wipe until I achieved the look I wanted.
Next, after the entire table was completely dry, I applied Venier Matte Clear Finish, which I purchased from Amazon.
I added the clear finish over the entire end table to help protect the newly painted surface.
While the table was drying, I turned my attention to the knobs.
I used Rub ’n Buff on the knobs to give them a fresh new finish that complemented the blue paint.
This was the result, and I think the updated knobs turned out beautifully. They added just the right finishing touch to the piece.
Not shown in the photos, the original backing of the end table was beginning to crumble and was no longer in good condition. I removed it and added a new backing to give the piece a cleaner, more finished look.
And here is the finished end table! I love how the bold blue, black wax, floral drawer lining, and updated knobs came together. What started as a simple Goodwill find now has a completely refreshed look and plenty of character.
